Ephesians Chapter 6 — KJ3 Literal Translation

1Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

2"Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment with a promise,

3"that it may be well with you, and you may be long-lived on the earth".

4And fathers, do not provoke to anger your children, but nurture them in the discipline and admonition of the Lord.

5Slaves, obey your lords according to flesh, with fear and trembling, in simplicity of your heart, as to Christ;

6not with eye-service as men-pleasers, but as slaves of Christ doing the will of God from the soul,

7serving as slaves with good will to the Lord, and not as to men,

8each one knowing that whatever good thing he does, this he shall receive from the Lord, whether a slave or a freeman.

9And lords, do the same things toward them, forbearing threatening, knowing that the Lord of you and of them is in Heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.

10For the rest, my brothers, be made powerful in the Lord and in the might of His strength.

11Put on the full armor of God, for you to be able to stand against the wiles of the devil,

12because our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the worldrulers of the darkness of this age, against the spiritual powers of evil in the heavenlies.

13Because of this, take up the full armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having worked out all things, to stand.

14Therefore stand firm, "having girded your loins about with truth" and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,"

15and having shod the feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace.

16Above all, taking up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the darts of the evil one having been made fiery.

17Also, take "the helmet of salvation," and the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God;

18through all prayer and petition, praying at all seasons in the Spirit, and being alert to this same end, with all perseverance and petition concerning all the saints.

19Pray also on my behalf, that to me may be given speech in the opening of my mouth with boldness to make known the mystery of the gospel,

20for which I am an ambassador in a chain, that in it I may speak boldly as it is right for me to speak.

21But that you also may know the things about me, what I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, will make known all things to you,

22whom I sent to you for this same thing, that you might know the things about us, and he may comfort your hearts.

23Peace to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

24Grace be with all those that love our Lord Jesus Christ in incorruptibility.

Belt of Truth

Ephesians 6:14a

"Therefore stand firm, having girded your loins about with truth"
🏛️ Historical Context

Roman soldiers wore a thick leather belt that held their tunic in place and supported their sword. Without it, they couldn't fight effectively.

✝️ Spiritual Meaning

Truth is foundational. Just as the belt held everything together, God's truth holds our spiritual life together.

📋 Practical Application
  • Study Scripture daily to know truth
  • Be honest in all dealings
  • Reject lies and deception
  • Let truth guide your decisions

"and having put on the breastplate of righteousness"
🏛️ Historical Context

The breastplate protected the soldier's vital organs—heart, lungs, and stomach. A blow to these areas would be fatal.

✝️ Spiritual Meaning

Christ's righteousness (not our own) protects our hearts from condemnation and accusation. We also pursue righteous living.

📋 Practical Application
  • Rest in Christ's righteousness, not works
  • Guard your heart from sin

🏛️ Historical Context

Roman soldiers wore hobnailed sandals (caligae) with studded soles for grip. Good footing was essential for battle stability.

✝️ Spiritual Meaning

We stand firm on the gospel and are ready to share it. Peace with God gives us stability; sharing brings peace to others.

📋 Practical Application

🏛️ Historical Context

The Roman scutum was a large, door-shaped shield (4 feet tall) covered in leather. Soaked in water, it could extinguish flaming arrows.

✝️ Spiritual Meaning

Faith in God deflects Satan's attacks—doubt, fear, temptation, accusation. "Above all" shows faith's supreme importance.

📋 Practical Application
  • Trust God's promises when attacked
  • Counter doubt with Scripture
