"A Man After God's Own Heart"

"And these are the last words of David, a saying of David the son of Jesse, and a statement of the man raised on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet singer of Israel: The Spirit of Jehovah has spoken by me, and His Word is on my tongue."
2 Samuel 23:1-2 (KJ3)

The Life of David

🐑
The Shepherd

Bethlehem Years

~1040–1025 BC · Age: Birth to ~15

The youngest of Jesse's eight sons, David tended his father's sheep in the fields near Bethlehem. In these quiet years, he learned courage defending his flock from lions and bears—and intimacy with God through prayer and song.

"And Jehovah said to Samuel, Do not look on his appearance, and not to the height of his stature, for I have rejected him. For man does not see what He sees. For man looks for the eyes, but Jehovah looks for the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7 (KJ3)

The Warrior

Giant Slayer

~1025 BC · Age: ~15-17

When the Philistine champion Goliath defied Israel for forty days, young David—armed only with a sling and five smooth stones—became the instrument of divine deliverance. His faith turned the tide of battle.

"You come to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of Jehovah of Hosts, the God of the ranks of Israel, whom you have reproached." 1 Samuel 17:45 (KJ3)

The Fugitive

Years in the Wilderness

~1020–1010 BC · Age: ~20-30

Saul's jealousy drove David into exile. For a decade he lived in caves, deserts, and enemy territory—yet twice spared Saul's life when given the chance to kill him. These years forged his character and produced many psalms.

"Jehovah forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the anointed of Jehovah, to put my hand against him, for he is the anointed of Jehovah." 1 Samuel 24:6 (KJ3)

The King

Ruler Over All Israel

~1010–970 BC · Age: 30-70

After Saul's death, David reigned first in Hebron over Judah, then over all Israel. He conquered Jerusalem, made it his capital, brought the Ark there with dancing, and received God's eternal covenant concerning his throne.

"Your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you; your throne shall be established forever." 2 Samuel 7:16 (KJ3)

The Psalmist

Sweet Singer of Israel

Throughout His Life

David authored at least 73 of the 150 Psalms—songs of praise, lament, thanksgiving, and prophecy. From the green pastures of Psalm 23 to the depths of repentance in Psalm 51, his words continue to guide worship today.

"Jehovah is my shepherd; I shall not lack. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me to waters of rest; He restores my soul; He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name's sake." Psalm 23:1-3 (KJ3)

The Shepherd's Psalm

Psalm XXIII

Jehovah is my Shepherd; I shall not lack.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul;
He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup runs over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life;
and I shall dwell in the house of Jehovah forever.

Psalm 23 (KJ3) —
