The Ten Plagues of Egypt

God's mighty acts of judgment against Egypt and their gods, demonstrating His supreme power and bringing deliverance to His people.

1

Blood

ื“ึธึผื (Dam)
Exodus 7:14-25

All the water in Egypt โ€” the Nile, streams, ponds, and even water in vessels โ€” turned to blood. Fish died and the river became foul.

"And Moses and Aaron did so, as Jehovah had commanded. And he lifted up the staff and struck the water which was in the river before Pharaoh's eyes, and before his servants' eyes. And all the water in the river turned to blood."
โ€” Exodus 7:20
๐ŸŽฏ Egyptian God Targeted: Hapi (god of the Nile) and Khnum (guardian of the Nile). The Egyptians worshiped the Nile as the source of life; God showed His power over their life-giver.
2

Frogs

ืฆึฐืคึทืจึฐื“ึตึผืขึท (Tzefardea)
Exodus 8:1-15

Frogs covered the entire land โ€” in houses, bedrooms, ovens, and kneading bowls. The land swarmed with them.

"And Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt."
โ€” Exodus 8:6
๐ŸŽฏ Egyptian God Targeted: Heqet, the frog-headed goddess of fertility and childbirth. What they worshiped became a plague upon them.
3

Lice (Gnats)

ื›ึดึผื ึดึผื™ื (Kinnim)
Exodus 8:16-19

The dust of the earth became swarms of gnats/lice that covered man and beast throughout Egypt.

"And they did so, and Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff and struck the dust of the earth. And the swarms of flies were on man and on beast. All the dust of the earth became swarms of flies in the land of Egypt."
โ€” Exodus 8:17
๐ŸŽฏ Egyptian God Targeted: Geb, the earth god. The magicians could not replicate this and declared "This is the finger of God!"
4

Flies

ืขึธืจึนื‘ (Arov)
Exodus 8:20-32

Dense swarms of flies filled Pharaoh's palace and the houses of Egypt. The land was destroyed by them.

"And Jehovah did so. And teeming swarms of flies came into Pharaoh's house, and the house of his servants, and into all the land of Egypt. And the land was destroyed before the swarms of flies."
โ€” Exodus 8:24
๐ŸŽฏ Egyptian God Targeted: Khepri, the scarab-headed god. First plague with distinction: Goshen (where Israel dwelt) was protected.
5

Livestock Death

ื“ึถึผื‘ึถืจ (Dever)
Exodus 9:1-7

A severe plague struck all Egyptian livestock โ€” horses, donkeys, camels, cattle, sheep, and goats โ€” but none of Israel's animals died.

"And Jehovah did this thing on the next day, and all the livestock of Egypt died. And from the livestock of the sons of Israel, not one died."
โ€” Exodus 9:6
๐ŸŽฏ Egyptian God Targeted: Hathor (cow goddess), Apis (bull god), and Khnum (ram god). Egypt's sacred animals died while Israel's were untouched.
6

Boils

ืฉึฐืื—ึดื™ืŸ (Sh'chin)
Exodus 9:8-12

Moses threw soot toward heaven, and painful boils broke out on all Egyptians and their animals.

"And they took soot of the furnace and stood before Pharaoh. And Moses sprinkled it toward the heavens, and it became a boil breaking out into boils on man and on livestock."
โ€” Exodus 9:10
๐ŸŽฏ Egyptian God Targeted: Isis (goddess of medicine) and Thoth (god of healing). The magicians couldn't even stand before Moses because of the boils!
7

Hail

ื‘ึธึผืจึธื“ (Barad)
Exodus 9:13-35

The worst hailstorm in Egypt's history, with fire flashing through it, destroyed crops, trees, and anyone caught outside.

"And Moses stretched out his staff to the heavens. And Jehovah gave thunder and hail. And fire came down to the earth, and Jehovah rained hail on the land of Egypt."
โ€” Exodus 9:23
๐ŸŽฏ Egyptian God Targeted: Nut (sky goddess), Osiris (god of crops), and Set (god of storms). God showed His control over the heavens.
8

Locusts

ืึทืจึฐื‘ึถึผื” (Arbeh)
Exodus 10:1-20

Locusts covered the land so thickly it became dark. They ate everything the hail had left.

"And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt, and rested on all the territory of Egypt, exceedingly many. Never were there locusts like them before, and afterward none will be like them."
โ€” Exodus 10:14
๐ŸŽฏ Egyptian God Targeted: Senehem (locust-headed deity) and Osiris (protector of crops). Complete agricultural devastation.
9

Darkness

ื—ึนืฉึถืืšึฐ (Choshech)
Exodus 10:21-29

Total darkness covered Egypt for three days โ€” so thick it could be felt. No one could see or move. But Israel had light.

"They did not see each man his brother, and they did not rise up, each man from his place for three days. Yet to all the sons of Israel there was light in their dwellings."
โ€” Exodus 10:22-23
๐ŸŽฏ Egyptian God Targeted: Ra, the supreme sun god, and Pharaoh himself (considered son of Ra). The darkness was a direct attack on Egypt's chief deity.
10

Death of Firstborn

ืžึทื›ึทึผืช ื‘ึฐึผื›ื•ึนืจื•ึนืช (Makkat B'chorot)
Exodus 11-12

At midnight, every firstborn in Egypt died โ€” from Pharaoh's heir to the prisoner's son and all firstborn animals. Only homes with the blood of the lamb were spared.

"And it happened at midnight. Jehovah struck every first-born in the land of Egypt, from the first-born of Pharaoh, the one sitting on the throne, to the first-born of the captive who was in the prison house, and every first-born of animals."
โ€” Exodus 12:29
๐ŸŽฏ Egyptian God Targeted: Pharaoh himself (considered a god) and all the gods of Egypt (Ex. 12:12). The Passover lamb foreshadows Christ, the ultimate Lamb of God.

Crossing the Red Sea

The dramatic climax of the Exodus โ€” Israel's deliverance through the divided waters and the destruction of Pharaoh's army.

๐ŸŒŠ The Parting of the Sea

Trapped between Pharaoh's approaching army and the sea, Israel cried out in fear. But God had a plan for their deliverance that would be remembered for all generations.

1 The Pursuit

Pharaoh hardened his heart and pursued Israel with 600 choice chariots and all the chariots of Egypt. Israel was trapped at the sea.

Exodus 14:5-12

2 The Promise

"Do not fear! Stand still and see the salvation of Jehovah... Jehovah will fight for you, and you shall be still."

Exodus 14:13-14

3 The Pillar

The pillar of cloud moved behind Israel, standing between them and Egypt. It was dark to Egypt but gave light to Israel all night.

Exodus 14:19-20

4 The Parting

Moses stretched his hand over the sea. God drove back the sea with a strong east wind all night, making the sea dry ground.

Exodus 14:21

5 The Passage

Israel walked through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on their right and left.

Exodus 14:22

6 The Destruction

Egypt pursued into the sea. God troubled them, removing chariot wheels. When Moses stretched his hand again, the waters returned and covered all of Pharaoh's army. Not one remained.

Exodus 14:23-28

Exodus 14:21-22 (KJ3)
"And the sons of Israel came into the middle of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them from their right and from their left. And the Egyptians pursued, and all the horses of Pharaoh came after them, his chariots and his horsemen, into the middle of the sea."
Exodus 14:27-28 (KJ3)
"And the waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen, together with all the army of Pharaoh, those going after them, into the sea. And not even one was left among them. And the sons of Israel walked on dry ground in the middle of the sea, the waters being a wall for them, from their right and from their left."

๐ŸŽต The Song of Moses (Exodus 15)

"I will sing to Jehovah, for He is highly exalted.
He has thrown the horse and his rider into the sea.

My strength and song is Jehovah,
and it happened, He was salvation to me;
this is my God and I will glorify Him;
the God of my father, and I will exalt Him."

โ€” Exodus 15:1-2 (KJ3)

The Wilderness Journey

From the Red Sea to Mount Sinai โ€” God's provision, testing, and revelation to His people in the desert.

๐Ÿ“ Key Stops on the Journey

๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Rameses, Egypt

Exodus 12:37

After 430 years, about 600,000 men (plus women and children) left Egypt with their livestock and the wealth of Egypt.

"And the sons of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, apart from little ones."
โ€” Exodus 12:37
๐ŸŒŠ

Red Sea (Yam Suph)

Exodus 14-15

The sea parted; Israel crossed on dry ground; Egypt's army was destroyed.

"And Israel saw the great work which Jehovah did on Egypt, and the people feared Jehovah, and they believed in Jehovah, and in His servant Moses."
โ€” Exodus 14:31
๐Ÿ’ง

Marah (Bitter Waters)

Exodus 15:22-26

After 3 days without water, they found water but it was bitter. God showed Moses a tree to make it sweet.

"And they came to Marah. And they were not able to drink water from Marah, for it was bitter... And he cried to Jehovah, and Jehovah showed him a tree. And he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet."
โ€” Exodus 15:23-25

Key Revelation: "I am Jehovah who heals you" (Jehovah Rapha)

๐ŸŒด

Elim (Oasis)

Exodus 15:27

A place of rest with 12 springs of water and 70 palm trees.

"And they came to Elim. And there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees. And they camped there by the waters."
โ€” Exodus 15:27

Significance: 12 springs (one for each tribe) and 70 palms (one for each elder) โ€” God's gracious provision.

๐Ÿž

Wilderness of Sin

Exodus 16

The people grumbled about food. God provided manna from heaven and quail.

"And the layer of dew went up, and, behold, something small was on the face of the wilderness, scalelike, small like the hoarfrost on the earth. And the sons of Israel looked. And they said, each man to his brother, What is that? For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, That is the bread which Jehovah has given to you for food."
โ€” Exodus 16:14-15

Daily Provision: Manna appeared each morning for 40 years. Double portion on the sixth day; none on Sabbath.

โ›ฐ๏ธ

Rephidim (Rock at Horeb)

Exodus 17:1-7

No water again. Moses struck the rock at Horeb and water flowed out. Also where Amalek attacked and was defeated.

"And one called the name of the place Massah (Testing), and Meribah (Quarreling), because of the quarreling of the sons of Israel, and because of their testing of Jehovah, saying, Is Jehovah in our midst, or not?"
โ€” Exodus 17:7

Battle of Rephidim: As long as Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed. Aaron and Hur held up his hands until sunset, and Joshua defeated Amalek.

โšก

Mount Sinai (Horeb)

Exodus 19-20

God descended on the mountain in fire, smoke, and thunder. He spoke the Ten Commandments and gave the Law.

"And the mountain of Sinai was smoking, all of it, because Jehovah came down on it in fire. And its smoke went up like the smoke of a furnace; and the mountain quaked exceedingly."
โ€” Exodus 19:18
"And God spoke all these words, saying, I am Jehovah your God, who has brought you out from the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. You shall not have any other gods before Me."
โ€” Exodus 20:1-3
