The Gospel of John

"These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name." โ€” John 20:31

โœจ The Prologue: The Word Made Flesh

John's Gospel opens not with a genealogy or birth narrative, but with a profound theological declaration about the divine nature of Christ. The Prologue establishes Jesus as the eternal Logos (Word) who was with God from the beginning and who is God.

And the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us. And we beheld His glory, glory as of an only begotten One from the Father, full of grace and of truth... No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, the One being into the bosom of the Father, that One declared Him.

Key Passages from 1 John

God is Light

God is light, and no darkness is in Him, none! If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and we walk in darkness, we lie and are not practicing the truth. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of His Son Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin.

โ€” 1 John 1:5-7

God is Love

Beloved ones, let us love one another, because love is from God, and every one who loves has been generated from God, and knows God. The one not loving did not know God, because God is love... Beloved ones, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

โ€” 1 John 4:7-8, 11

Testing the Spirits

Beloved ones, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are from God; for many false prophets have gone forth into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit which confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God.

โ€” 1 John 4:1-2

Confession & Forgiveness

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous that He may forgive us the sins, and may cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

โ€” 1 John 1:9

โค๏ธ Perfect Love Casts Out Fear

"There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment; and the one fearing has not been perfected in love. We love Him because He first loved us."
๐Ÿ‘‘

The Revelation of Jesus Christ

"Blessed is the one reading, and the ones hearing the words of this prophecy, and keeping the things having been written; for the time is near." โ€” Revelation 1:3

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ The Vision on Patmos

I, even your brother John, and cosharer in the affliction, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, came to be in the island being called Patmos on account of the Word of God, and for the witness of Jesus Christ. I came to be in the Spirit on the day belonging to the Lord...

โ€” Revelation 1:9-10

The Glorified Christ:

And in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, having been clothed to the feet, and having been girded with a golden girdle at the breasts. And the hairs of His head were white as white wool, as snow, and His eyes as a flame of fire; and His feet like burnished brass having been fired in a furnace; and His voice as a sound of many waters.

The Beloved Disciple

"The disciple whom Jesus loved" โ€” A unique figure in John's Gospel

Who is the Beloved Disciple?

The Gospel of John contains several references to "the disciple whom Jesus loved"โ€”a figure traditionally identified as the apostle John himself, the son of Zebedee. This disciple had a uniquely close relationship with Jesus and is presented as an eyewitness to key events in Christ's ministry, death, and resurrection.

๐Ÿž At the Last Supper

"But there was one of His disciples reclining at the bosom of Jesus, whom Jesus loved. Therefore Simon Peter nods to this one to ask whom it might be of whom He spoke. And that one lying on the breast of Jesus said to Him, Lord, who is it?" โ€” John 13:23-25

โœ๏ธ At the Cross

Jesus entrusts His mother Mary to this disciple: "Woman, behold, your son! Then He says to the disciple, Behold, your mother! And from that hour the disciple took her into his own." โ€” John 19:26-27

๐Ÿƒ At the Empty Tomb

This disciple outran Peter to the tomb and "saw and believed" when he witnessed the grave clothes left behind. โ€” John 20:2-8

๐ŸŸ At the Sea of Tiberias

"Therefore the disciple whom Jesus loved says to Peter, It is the Lord. Then Simon Peter hearing that it is the Lord, having girded on his outer garment... threw himself into the sea." โ€” John 21:7

๐Ÿ“œ The Eyewitness Author

"This is the disciple, the one witnessing about these things, and having written these things. And we know that his witness is true." โ€” John 21:24

๐Ÿ”ฎ "Until I Come"

Jesus' enigmatic saying: "If I desire him to remain until I come, what is that to you?" led to speculation about this disciple's longevity. โ€” John 21:20-23

๐Ÿ‘ค John, Son of Zebedee

The early church unanimously identified the Beloved Disciple as John, the son of Zebedee, one of the Twelve Apostles. Key evidence includes:

  • Part of the Inner Circle: Along with Peter and James, John witnessed the Transfiguration, the raising of Jairus's daughter, and Jesus' agony in Gethsemane.
  • Son of Thunder: Jesus nicknamed James and John "Boanerges" (sons of thunder) โ€” Mark 3:17
  • Fisherman from Galilee: John and his brother James were fishing partners with Peter and Andrew (Luke 5:10)
  • Early Church Testimony: Irenaeus, Polycarp's disciple, affirmed John's authorship of the Gospel and his residence in Ephesus
  • The Eagle: Traditional symbol representing John's soaring theological vision

And going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and his brother John in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. And He called them. And at once leaving the boat and their father, they followed Him.

โ€” Matthew 4:21-22

๐Ÿ’ญ Theological Significance

The title "the disciple whom Jesus loved" is not a boast but a confession of grace. John's self-designation emphasizes:

๐ŸŽ Received Love
๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Eyewitness Authority
๐Ÿค Intimate Fellowship
๐Ÿ™ˆ Humble Anonymity

By calling himself "the disciple whom Jesus loved," John invites every believer to identify with this positionโ€”we are all beloved disciples of Christ.

โค๏ธ Love Received and Given

"I give a new commandment to you, that you should love one another; according as I loved you, you should also love one another. By this all shall know that you are My disciples, if you have love among one another."
