Abraham Β· Isaac Β· Jacob Β· Joseph
Fathers of Faith β Founders of Israel
And I will establish My covenant between Me and you, and your seed after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be for God to you and to your seed after you.β Genesis 17:7 (KJ3)
And I will establish My covenant between Me and you, and your seed after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be for God to you and to your seed after you.
β Genesis 17:7 (KJ3)The Patriarchs are the founding fathers of the nation of Israel. Through these men, God established His covenant promises that would ultimately lead to the coming of the Messiah. Their stories teach us about faith, obedience, perseverance, and God's sovereign plan.
"Father of Many Nations"
"Child of Promise"
"He Wrestles with God"
"God Meant It for Good"
God chose Abraham from Ur of the Chaldees and called him to leave his homeland for a land that God would show him. Through Abraham's son Isaac (not Ishmael), then through Isaac's son Jacob (not Esau), the covenant promises continued. Jacob's twelve sons became the twelve tribes of Israel, with Joseph playing a crucial role in preserving the family during famine.
God promised Abraham and his descendants the land of Canaan as an everlasting possession.
Genesis 12:7, 15:18-21Abraham's descendants would be as numerous as the stars of heaven and the sand of the sea.
Genesis 15:5, 22:17In Abraham's Seed, all the nations of the earth would be blessed β fulfilled in Christ.
Genesis 12:3, 22:18"Father of Many Nations" β Originally "Abram" meaning "Exalted Father"
Lived: ~2166β1991 BC | Age: 175 years | Genesis 11:26β25:10
And Jehovah had said to Abram, Go out from your land and from your kindred, and from your father's house, to the land which I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation. And I will bless you and make your name great; and you will be a blessing.
β Genesis 12:1-2 (KJ3)Abraham is called the "father of faith" because he believed God's promises even when they seemed impossible. At age 75, God called him to leave his home in Ur and journey to an unknown land. Despite having no children, God promised him descendants as numerous as the stars.
After 25 years of waiting, when Abraham was 100 and Sarah was 90, God fulfilled His promise with the birth of Isaac. Abraham's faith was ultimately tested when God asked him to sacrifice Isaac β the son through whom all the promises would come. Abraham obeyed, and God provided a ram in Isaac's place.
Abraham's family left Ur (modern Iraq) and settled in Haran where his father Terah died.
At age 75, Abraham obeyed God's call and journeyed to Canaan, stopping at Shechem where God appeared to him.
Abraham built altars and continued traveling through the land, dwelling between Bethel and Ai.
A famine drove Abraham to Egypt where he deceived Pharaoh about Sarah being his sister.
Abraham settled near the oaks of Mamre at Hebron, which became his primary home.
God tested Abraham by asking him to sacrifice Isaac on Mount Moriah (later the site of the Temple).
"Look now at the heavens and count the stars, if you are able to count them... So shall your seed be."
Genesis 15:5"I will establish My covenant between Me and you, and your seed after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant."
Genesis 17:7"And in your Seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed because you have obeyed My voice."
Genesis 22:18Also: Ishmael (by Hagar) β father of 12 princes, ancestor of Arab peoples
And he believed in Jehovah. And He counted it to him for righteousness.
β Genesis 15:6 (KJ3)"He Laughs" β Named because Sarah laughed when told she would have a son
Lived: ~2066β1886 BC | Age: 180 years | Genesis 21β35
And I will increase your seed like the stars of the heavens, and I will give to your seed all these lands. And all the nations of the earth shall bless themselves in your Seed.
β Genesis 26:4 (KJ3)Isaac was the long-awaited "child of promise," born to Abraham and Sarah in their old age. His birth was a miracle β Sarah was 90 years old! His name means "he laughs" because both Abraham and Sarah laughed when God announced his coming birth.
Isaac is perhaps best known for the dramatic event on Mount Moriah, where his father was prepared to sacrifice him in obedience to God. Isaac submitted to his father, carrying the wood for his own sacrifice β a powerful picture of Christ who carried His own cross. God provided a ram as a substitute.
Isaac married Rebekah, who was chosen by Abraham's servant in answer to prayer. Like his mother, Rebekah was barren for 20 years until Isaac prayed and God gave them twins: Esau and Jacob.
Born to Abraham (100) and Sarah (90) as God's promised son, bringing laughter and joy.
Abraham's faith tested; Isaac submissively carried the wood. God provided a ram as substitute.
Abraham's servant traveled to find a wife for Isaac. Rebekah was chosen through prayer at the well.
After 20 years of prayer, Rebekah conceived twins: Esau and Jacob, who struggled in the womb.
Isaac dwelt in Gerar during famine; God blessed him greatly. He re-dug Abraham's wells.
In old age, Isaac was deceived into blessing Jacob instead of Esau, fulfilling God's prophecy.
Isaac was Abraham's only son through Sarah, called "your only son" β as Jesus is God's only begotten Son.
Isaac carried the wood for his own sacrifice up Mount Moriah, as Jesus carried His cross to Calvary.
Isaac willingly submitted to his father's will, just as Jesus said "Not my will, but Yours be done."
"Heel-Catcher" β "He Wrestles with God" β Name changed by God
Lived: ~2006β1859 BC | Age: 147 years | Genesis 25β50
And He said, Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, because you have wrestled with God and with men, and have prevailed.
β Genesis 32:28 (KJ3)Jacob's life is one of transformation. Born grasping his twin brother Esau's heel, he lived up to his name "supplanter" by deceiving his father and taking Esau's blessing. Yet God had chosen Jacob before birth, declaring "the older shall serve the younger."
Fleeing from Esau's anger, Jacob had a life-changing vision at Bethel β a ladder reaching to heaven with angels ascending and descending, and God standing above, renewing the covenant promises. Jacob vowed that Jehovah would be his God.
After 20 years working for Laban (marrying Leah and Rachel, and fathering 11 sons and 1 daughter), Jacob returned to Canaan. At the Jabbok river, he wrestled with a mysterious man until dawn β an encounter with God that left him with a limp and a new name: Israel.
And he dreamed. And, behold, a ladder was placed on the earth, its top reaching to the heavens. And, behold, the angels of God were going up and going down on it! And, behold, Jehovah stood above it and said, I am Jehovah the God of your father Abraham, and the God of Isaac; the land on which you are lying, I will give it to you and to your seed.
β Genesis 28:12-13 (KJ3)Born holding Esau's heel. Later bought Esau's birthright for a bowl of lentil stew.
With Rebekah's help, Jacob deceived blind Isaac and received the firstborn's blessing.
Fleeing to Haran, Jacob saw the heavenly ladder and received God's covenant promise.
Worked 14 years for Rachel (deceived into marrying Leah first). Fathered 11 sons in Haran.
Wrestled with God all night. His hip was dislocated but he received a new name: Israel.
At age 130, Jacob moved his entire family to Egypt to reunite with Joseph.
Four Wives:
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,
Issachar, Zebulun, Dinah
Joseph, Benjamin
Dan, Naphtali
Gad, Asher
And your seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and you shall spread to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your Seed.
β Genesis 28:14 (KJ3)"He Will Add" β Rachel said "May Jehovah add to me another son"
Lived: ~1915β1805 BC | Age: 110 years | Genesis 30, 37β50
And you, you intended evil against me, but God meant it for good, in order to make it as it is this day, to keep a great many people alive.
β Genesis 50:20 (KJ3)Joseph's life demonstrates God's sovereign providence like no other. As Jacob's favorite son (the firstborn of beloved Rachel), Joseph was given a special coat and had prophetic dreams that his family would bow to him. His jealous brothers sold him into slavery at age 17.
In Egypt, Joseph rose to manage Potiphar's house, was falsely accused and imprisoned, yet interpreted dreams for Pharaoh's servants. When Pharaoh had troubling dreams, Joseph was brought from prison to interpret them β seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine.
At age 30, Joseph became second-in-command of all Egypt. During the famine, his brothers came to buy grain, unknowingly bowing before him just as his dreams foretold. Joseph tested them, then revealed himself in a tearful reunion, recognizing God's hand in everything.
And, behold! We were binding sheaves in the middle of the field. And, behold, my sheaf rose up and even stood up. And, behold, your sheaves came around and bowed themselves to my sheaf.
β Genesis 37:7 (KJ3)Behold, I have dreamed another dream: And, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars were bowing themselves to me.
β Genesis 37:9 (KJ3)Jacob gave Joseph a special coat. Joseph's dreams of his family bowing to him increased their hatred.
Brothers plotted to kill him but sold him to Ishmaelite traders for 20 pieces of silver.
Rose to manage Potiphar's household. Falsely accused by Potiphar's wife and imprisoned.
Interpreted dreams for Pharaoh's cupbearer and baker. Cupbearer forgot Joseph for 2 years.
Interpreted Pharaoh's dreams of 7 years plenty and 7 years famine. Made ruler of Egypt.
During famine, brothers came for grain. After testing them, Joseph revealed himself.
Jacob and entire family (70 persons) moved to Egypt. Settled in Goshen.
"God visiting will visit you, and you will bring up my bones from here." β Joseph died at 110.
Jacob adopted Joseph's sons, giving Joseph a double portion. Both became tribes of Israel.
Joseph was hated and rejected by his own brothers, as Jesus was rejected by His own people.
Joseph was sold for 20 pieces of silver; Jesus was betrayed for 30 pieces of silver.
Joseph saved many from starvation; Jesus is the Bread of Life who saves from spiritual death.
After slavery and prison, Joseph was exalted to Pharaoh's right hand β as Christ was exalted after the cross.
And Joseph said to his brothers, I am dying, and God visiting will visit you and bring you up from this land to the land which He swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
β Genesis 50:24 (KJ3)
Note: Levi β‘οΈ became the priestly tribe (no land inheritance).
Joseph's sons Manasseh and Ephraim were adopted by Jacob,
giving Joseph a double portion and maintaining 12 tribal territories.
Judah π is the royal tribe β from Judah came King David and ultimately Jesus Christ,
"the Lion of the tribe of Judah" (Revelation 5:5).
Received the covenant promises: land, seed, and blessing to all nations. Lived 175 years.
The promised son through whom the covenant continued (not Ishmael). Lived 180 years.
Chosen over Esau before birth. His 12 sons became the 12 tribes. Lived 147 years.
Saved his family from famine. His sons Ephraim and Manasseh became tribes. Lived 110 years.
