⚠️

Solomon's Tragic Decline

Despite all his God-given wisdom, Solomon disobeyed the Lord's clear commands. His many foreign wives turned his heart away from God in his old age, leading him into idolatry. The wisest man who ever lived fell into the very foolishness he warned against—a sobering reminder that no one is beyond temptation.
The Heart Turns

And it happened, at the time Solomon was old, his wives turned away his heart after other gods. And his heart was not perfect with Jehovah his God, like the heart of his father David.

1 Kings 11:4 (KJ3)

Idolatry Established

And Solomon went after Ashtoreth, goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites... Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem; and for Molech the abomination of the sons of Ammon.

1 Kings 11:5,7 (KJ3)

God's Anger

And Jehovah was angry with Solomon, for his heart had turned away from Jehovah the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice, and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods. But he did not keep that which Jehovah commanded.

1 Kings 11:9-10 (KJ3)

Kingdom Torn Away

And Jehovah said to Solomon, Because this has been with you, and you have not kept My covenant and My statutes which I commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you, and will give it to your servant. Only, I will not do it in your days, for the sake of your father David; I will tear it out of the hand of your son.

1 Kings 11:11-12 (KJ3)

⚠️ Solomon's Fatal Mistakes

  • Married 700 wives and 300 concubines, many from nations God forbade
  • Allowed his wives to worship their false gods in Israel
  • Built high places and altars for Chemosh, Molech, and Ashtoreth
  • His own heart turned to worship other gods in his old age
  • Multiplied horses from Egypt (against Deuteronomy 17:16)
  • Multiplied silver and gold greatly (against Deuteronomy 17:17)
  • Heavy taxation burdened the people and sowed seeds of rebellion

Consequences of Solomon's Sin

  • Kingdom Division:10 tribes torn away and given to Jeroboam
  • Remaining to David's Line:Only Judah and Benjamin
  • Adversaries Raised:Hadad the Edomite, Rezon of Syria, Jeroboam
  • End of Peace:Enemies troubled Israel for the rest of Solomon's reign
  • Spiritual Legacy:Idolatry remained in Israel until the exile
  • Warning to All:Even the wisest can fall if they disobey God

Solomon's Biblical Writings

Solomon's inspired writings form a significant portion of Scripture. Three books bear his name, along with two Psalms. His works span wisdom literature, romantic poetry, and philosophical reflection on life's meaning.

Proverbs

מִשְׁלֵי (Mishlei)

Theme: Practical Wisdom for Daily Living

A collection of wise sayings covering every area of life—relationships, work, speech, money, morality, and the fear of the Lord. Proverbs teaches skill in living according to God's design.

"The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge; but fools despise wisdom and instruction." Proverbs 1:7 (KJ3)

Ecclesiastes

קֹהֶלֶת (Qoheleth)

Theme: The Vanity of Life Without God

Written late in life, Solomon reflects on the meaninglessness of life "under the sun"—apart from God. He tested everything: wisdom, pleasure, work, wealth—and found it all empty without the fear of God.

"Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher; vanity of vanities! All is vanity... Let us hear the end of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments. For this is all of man." Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12:13 (KJ3)

Song of Solomon

שִׁיר הַשִּׁירִים (Shir HaShirim)

Theme: The Beauty of Marital Love

A poetic celebration of romantic love between husband and wife. Viewed both as literal marital love and as an allegory of Christ's love for His Church. The most sublime of Solomon's 1,005 songs.

"I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine." Song of Solomon 6:3 (KJ3)

Psalm 72

A Psalm for Solomon

Theme: The Righteous King's Reign

A messianic psalm describing the reign of the ideal king—ultimately Christ. It speaks of justice, prosperity, worldwide dominion, and eternal blessing. Written by or for Solomon at the start of his reign.

"He shall have dominion from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth... All kings shall fall down before Him; all nations shall serve Him." Psalm 72:8,11 (KJ3)

Psalm 127

A Song of Ascents for Solomon

Theme: God's Blessing on Home & Work

A short wisdom psalm teaching that all human effort is futile without the Lord's blessing. Whether building a house (like the Temple) or raising children, success comes from God alone.

"Unless Jehovah builds the house, they labor in vain, those building it. Unless Jehovah guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain." Psalm 127:1 (KJ3)
