Now a certain one was sick, Lazarus from Bethany,
of the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
And it was Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment
and wiped off His feet with her hair,
whose brother Lazarus was sick.
Then the sisters sent to Him, saying,
Lord, behold, the one whom You love is sick.
And hearing, Jesus said,
This sickness is not to death,
but for the glory of God,
that the Son of God may be glorified through it.
And Jesus loved Martha and her sister, and Lazarus.
Then when He heard that he is sick,
then indeed He remained in the place where He was two days.
Then after this He said to the disciples,
Let us go into Judea again.
The disciples said to Him,
Rabbi, now the Jews sought to stone You,
and do You again go there?
Jesus answered,
Are there not twelve hours in the day?
If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble,
because he sees the light of the world.
But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles,
because the light is not in him.
He said these things, and after this He said to them,
Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep,
but I go so that I may awaken him.
Then His disciples said,
Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will be cured.
But Jesus had spoken about his death,
but they thought that He spoke about the rest of sleep.
Then Jesus said to them plainly,
Lazarus has died.
And I rejoice for your sake, so that you may believe,
that I was not there.
But let us go to him.
Then Thomas, the one called Twin, said to his fellow disciples,
Let us go, even we, that we may die with Him.
Then coming, Jesus found him already being four days in the tomb.
And Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away.
And many of the Jews had come to those around Martha and Mary,
that they might comfort them concerning their brother.
Then Martha, as she heard that Jesus is coming, met Him;
but Mary sat in the house.
Then Martha said to Jesus,
Lord, if You were here, my brother would not have died.
But even now I know that as many things as You may ask of God,
God will give to You.
Jesus says to her,
Your brother will rise again.
Martha said to Him,
I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day.
Jesus said to her,
I am the Resurrection and the Life.
The one believing into Me, though he die, he shall live.
And everyone living and believing into Me shall not die forever.
Do you believe this?
She said to Him,
Yes, Lord, I have believed that You are the Christ,
the Son of God, the One coming into the world.
And saying these things, she went away
and called her sister Mary secretly, saying,
The Teacher is here and calls you.
As she heard, she rises up quickly and comes to Him.
But Jesus had not yet come into the village,
but was in the place where Martha met Him.
Then the Jews, the ones being with her in the house and comforting her,
seeing Mary that she quickly rose up and went out, followed her,
saying, She is going to the tomb, that she may weep there.
Then when Mary came where Jesus was, seeing Him,
she fell at His feet, saying to Him,
Lord, if You were here, my brother would not have died.
Then when Jesus saw her weeping,
and the Jews coming with her weeping,
He groaned in the spirit and troubled Himself.
And He said, Where have you laid him?
They said to Him, Lord, come and see.
Jesus wept.
