KJ3 Literal Translation — Chapter 50 of 50

1 And Joseph fell on the face of his father and wept on him, and kissed him.

2 And Joseph commanded the physicians, his servants, to embalm his father; and the physicians embalmed Israel.

3 And forty days were fulfilled, for so are fulfilled the days of those embalmed. And Egypt wept for him seventy days.

Timeline

Joseph Mourns and Embalms Jacob

Joseph falls on his father's face, weeps, and kisses him. He commands his physicians to embalm Jacob (Israel), a process taking 40 days. The Egyptians mourn for 70 days.

Joseph Seeks Pharaoh's Permission for Burial

After the mourning period, Joseph seeks permission from Pharaoh to go bury his father in the grave Jacob dug for himself in Canaan, as he swore to him. Pharaoh grants permission.

Jacob's Funeral Procession

Joseph goes up to bury his father, accompanied by all Pharaoh's servants, the elders of his house and Egypt, all of Joseph's household, his brothers, and his father's household (leaving only little ones and flocks in Goshen). A very great company with horsemen and chariots accompanies them.
