KJ3 Literal Translation — Chapter 19 of 36

1 And Jehovah spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

2 This is the statute of the law which Jehovah has commanded, saying, Speak to the sons of Israel, that they bring you a red heifer, without blemish, in which there is no blemish, on which no yoke ever came.

3 And you shall give her to Eleazar the priest, and she shall be brought forth outside the camp; and she shall be slaughtered before his face.

Chapter Summary

The ordinance of the red heifer is given for ceremonial purification. The heifer is burned outside the camp with cedar wood, hyssop, and scarlet. Its ashes are mixed with water for the cleansing of those defiled by contact with the dead.

Red Heifer Ceremony

God established a statute requiring an unblemished red heifer to be slaughtered and completely burned outside the camp 49 . Cedar wood, hyssop, and scarlet were thrown into the fire, and the ashes were preserved for the water of impurity 50 .

Rules for Touching the Dead

Anyone who touched a human corpse or a grave was deemed unclean for seven days 51 . A clean person had to sprinkle them with the water of impurity on the third and seventh days; failure to purify oneself resulted in being cut off from Israel 53 .
