Timeline

Levite Cities and Cities of Refuge

Israel is commanded to give the Levites 48 cities with surrounding pasturelands out of their tribal inheritances. Six of these are designated as cities of refuge where anyone who accidentally kills someone may flee from the avenger of blood.

Numbers 35:1-15
Laws of Manslaughter vs. Murder

Detailed statutes distinguish between intentional murder with an iron, stone, or wooden weapon, which requires the death penalty without ransom, and accidental manslaughter without enmity. A manslayer must be judged by the congregation and remain safely in the city of refuge until the high priest dies.
