Ezra Leaves Babylon for Jerusalem

In the seventh year of Artaxerxes, Ezra, a skilled scribe in the Law of Moses, prepares his heart to teach Israel and departs from Babylon with priests, Levites, and others, arriving in Jerusalem in the fifth month.

Artaxerxes Issues a Decree Supporting Ezra

King Artaxerxes gives Ezra a formal decree granting him authority, silver, gold, provisions, and tax exemptions for temple workers, and commands him to appoint magistrates and judges Beyond the River.

Ezra Praises God and Gathers Leaders

Ezra blesses Jehovah for putting it into the king's heart to beautify the temple and for granting him mercy. Strengthened by God, Ezra gathers chief men out of Israel to return with him.
