1 And when Abram was ninety-nine years old, Jehovah appeared to Abram and said to him, I am the Almighty God! Walk before me and be perfect;

2 and I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you very much.

Jehovah (God Almighty)

Appears to Abram as El Shaddai, renews the covenant, and institutes circumcision as its sign.

Abraham

Ninety-nine-year-old patriarch, renamed from Abram; falls on his face, laughs, and circumcises his household.

Sarah

Abraham's wife, renamed from Sarai; blessed and promised a son, Isaac, in her old age.

Ishmael

Abraham's son by Hagar, age thirteen; blessed to father twelve chiefs and circumcised with the household.

Timeline

Covenant Renewed, Abram's Name Changed to Abraham

When Abram is 99 years old, God Almighty appears to him, reaffirms His covenant, and promises to multiply him greatly. Abram falls on his face. God changes Abram's name to Abraham, meaning 'father of many nations.'

Promise of Fruitfulness and Kings

God promises Abraham he will be exceedingly fruitful, nations will come from him, and kings will come out of him.

Everlasting Covenant and Land Possession

God establishes an everlasting covenant with Abraham and his seed through generations, to be their God. He promises all the land of Canaan as an everlasting possession.
