Genesis 35:1Jacob tells his household to put away strange gods, purify themselves, and change their clothing. They give Jacob all their foreign gods and earrings, which Jacob hides under an oak near Shechem.
Genesis 35:2-4As they travel, a terror from God falls on surrounding cities, preventing pursuit. Jacob arrives at Luz (Beth-el) in Canaan and builds an altar, calling it El-beth-el, because God revealed Himself there.
