KJ3 Literal Translation — Chapter 35 of 50

1 And God said to Jacob, Rise up, go to Beth-el and live there. And make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled before your brother Esau.

2 And Jacob said to his house, and to all those with him, Put away the strange gods in your midst, and purify yourselves, and change your clothing.

3 And let us rise up and go up to Beth-el. And I will make an altar there to God, who answered me in the day of my distress. And He was with me in the way in which I went.

Jacob Purifies His Household

Jacob tells his household to put away strange gods, purify themselves, and change their clothing. They give Jacob all their foreign gods and earrings, which Jacob hides under an oak near Shechem.

Return to Beth-el, God's Blessing

As they travel, a terror from God falls on surrounding cities, preventing pursuit. Jacob arrives at Luz (Beth-el) in Canaan and builds an altar, calling it El-beth-el, because God revealed Himself there.
