Genesis 4

KJ3 Literal Translation — Chapter 4 of 50

1 And the man knew his wife Eve. And she conceived and bore Cain, and she said, I have gotten a man with the help of Jehovah.

2 And she added to bear his brother, Abel. And Abel became a feeder of a flock. And Cain became a tiller of the ground.

3 And in the end of days, it happened that Cain brought an offering to Jehovah from the fruit of the ground.

Cain

First son of Adam and Eve, a tiller of the ground; murders his brother Abel and is cursed to wander.

Abel

Second son of Adam and Eve, a keeper of flocks whose offering Jehovah accepts; murdered by Cain.

Jehovah

Accepts Abel's offering, confronts and curses Cain, yet sets a protective mark on him.

Descendant of Cain who takes two wives and boasts of avenging himself seventy-sevenfold.

Timeline

Birth of Cain and Abel

Eve conceives and bears Cain, and later, Abel. Cain becomes a tiller of the ground, and Abel a feeder of flocks.

Genesis 4:1-2
Cain Murders Abel

Cain brings an offering from the ground, but it is not favored by God. Abel brings an offering from the firstlings of his flock, which God favors. Enraged, Cain kills Abel in the field.

Genesis 4:3-8
Curse and Mark of Cain

God confronts Cain, curses him to be a vagabond and fugitive, and puts a mark on him to prevent anyone from killing him. Cain lives in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
