KJ3 Literal Translation — Chapter 48 of 52

1 So says Jehovah of Hosts, the God of Israel, against Moab: Woe to Nebo, for it is devastated! Kiriathaim is put to shame and captured. The fortress is put to shame and shattered.

2 Moab shall not still be praised. In Heshbon they have plotted evil against it, saying, Come and let us cut it off as a nation. And you shall be silenced, O madmen; a sword will go after you,

3 a voice of crying from Horonaim, plundering and great ruin!

People & Context

Moab

The proud nation under judgment; her cities devastated, made a mockery, then restored in the end of days (v1-47)

Chemosh

The god of Moab, shamed and sent into exile with his priests and rulers; his people perish (v7, 13, 46)

Israel

Jehovah's people, once mocked by Moab and once ashamed of Bethel, set as a foil to Moab's fate (v13, 27)

Sihon

The former Amorite king of Heshbon, named as the place from whose midst a devouring flame goes out (v45)

Timeline

Oracle of Desolation Against Moab

God pronounces absolute destruction on the cities of Moab (Nebo, Heshbon, Kiriathaim). Moab's ease from its youth is shattered, its idol Chemosh goes into exile, and the nation is made a mockery and a broken vessel.
