Proverbs 18

Death and life are in the hand of the tongue.

1He who separates himself seeks to gain his own desire; he breaks out against all sound wisdom.
2A fool has no delight in understanding, but only in uncovering his heart.
3When the wicked one comes, scorn also comes, and with shame comes reproach.
4The words of a man's mouth are like deep waters, the fountain of wisdom is a flowing stream.
5To lift up the face of the wicked one is not good, to thrust aside the righteous one in judgment.
6The lips of a foolish one enter into strife, and his mouth calls for strokes.
7The mouth of a fool is his ruin, and his lips are the snare of his soul.
8The words of a slanderer are greedily swallowed; yea, they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
9And he who is slack in his work, he is a brother to a master of destruction.
10The name of Jehovah is a tower of strength; the righteous one runs into it and is set on high.
11The rich man's wealth is his strong city, and as a high wall in his imagination.
12Before shattering, a man's heart is haughty, but humility goes before honor.
13One turning back a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame to him.
14The spirit of a man will endure his sickness, but who can bear a stricken spirit?
15The heart of one being discerning gets knowledge, and the ear of the wise one seeks knowledge.
16A man's bribe makes room for him, and it leads him before the great.
17The first in his cause seems to be a just one, but his neighbor comes and examines him.
18The lot causes contentions to cease, and divides between the mighty ones.
19A brother transgressing is like a city of strength; and their contentions are like the bar of a castle.
20A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; he shall be satisfied with the produce of his lips.
21Death and life are in the hand of the tongue, and those who love it shall eat its fruit.
22He finding a wife finds good, and obtains favor from Jehovah.
23The one being poor speaks with entreaties, but the rich one answers fiercely.
24A man of friends may be broken up, but there is a Lover who sticks closer than a brother.
