Psalms 89

The psalmist praises Jehovah. He complains of great contradictions and craves redress. A Lesson of Ethan the Ezrahite.

1A Poem of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the mercies of Jehovah forever; I will speak with my mouth Your faithfulness to generation and generation.
2For I have said, Mercy shall be built up forever; You shall establish Your faithfulness in the heavens.
3I have cut a covenant with My elect; I have sworn to David My servant,
4I will establish Your Seed forever, and build up Your throne to generation and generation. Selah.
5And the heavens shall thank Your wonders, O Jehovah; also Your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones.
6For who in the cloud is ranked with Jehovah, who among the sons of the mighty is like Jehovah?
7God is greatly to be seen as awesome in the counsel of the holy ones, and to be feared by all round about Him.
8O Jehovah God of Hosts, who is a strong Jehovah like You? And Your faithfulness is all round about You.
9You rule the pride of the sea; when its waves rise high, You still them.
10You have crushed Rahab, as one slain; You have scattered Your enemies with Your mighty arm.
11The heavens are Yours, and the earth is Yours; the world and its fullness, You founded them.
12You have created the north and the south; Tabor and Hermon gave a ringing cry of joy in Your name.
13To You is an arm of might; Your hand is strong, Your right hand is high.
14Justice and righteousness are Your throne's foundation; mercy and truth go before Your face.
15O the blessedness of the people knowing the joyful sound; O Jehovah, they shall walk in the light of Your face.
16They shall rejoice in Your name always; and they are exalted in Your righteousness.
17For You are the glory of their strength; and by Your favor You lift up our horn.
18For Jehovah is our shield, yea, the Holy One of Israel our King.
19Then You spoke in a vision to Your Holy One; and You said, I have laid help on a mighty One. I have exalted an Elect One from the people.
20I have found My servant David; I have anointed Him with My holy oil.
21My hand shall be fixed with Him; and My arm shall make Him strong.
22An enemy will not exact against Him; the son of iniquity shall not afflict Him.
23And I will beat down His adversaries before Him, and plague those hating Him.
24But My faithfulness and My mercy is with Him; and His horn shall be exalted in My name.
25And I will set His hand in the sea, and His right hand in the rivers.
26He shall cry to Me, My Father, You are My God, and the rock of My salvation.
27Also I will make Him My First-born, higher than the kings of the earth.
28I will keep My mercy for Him forever, and My covenant shall be to Him.
29And I have set his Seed forever, and His throne as the days of the heavens.
30If His sons forsake My Law, and do not walk in My judgments;
31if they profane My statutes and do not keep My commandments;
32then I will visit their transgressions with the rod, and their sins with stripes.
33But I will not annul My mercy from him, and I will not be false in My faithfulness.
34I will not profane My covenant, nor change what goes from My lips.
35Once I have sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David.
36His Seed shall be fixed forever, and His throne as the sun before Me.
37Like the moon, it shall be fixed forever, and a faithful witness in the heaven. Selah.
38But You have cast off and rejected us; You have passed over on Your anointed.
39You have spurned from the covenant of Your servant; You have defiled his crown on the ground.
40You have broken down all his walls; You have brought his strongholds to ruin.
41All who pass by the way plunder him; he is a reproach to his neighbors.
42You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries; You have made all his enemies rejoice.
43Also you have turned back the edge of the sword, and have not raised him up in battle.
44You have made his brightness to cease and have hurled his throne to the ground.
45You have shortened the days of his youth; You have covered him over with shame. Selah.
46Until when, O Jehovah? Will You hide Yourself? Shall Your wrath burn like fire forever?
47Remember, I pray, the time of life; for what vanity have you created all the sons of men?
48What man lives and never sees death? Shall he deliver his soul from the hand of Sheol? Selah.
49Lord, where are Your former kindnesses that You swore to David in Your faithfulness?
50Remember, O Lord, the reproach of Your servants, my bearing in my bosom the insults of the many peoples
51with which Your enemies have reproached, O Jehovah; with which they have cursed the footsteps of Your Anointed.
52Praised be Jehovah forever. Amen and Amen!
